I, Slacker

The story of one man's brave journey from being a globetrotting internet professional to becoming a full-time slacker. It's about exchanging money for time, rediscover forgotten pleasures and enjoy the small (cubans & sportcars) and the bigger (the missus) things in life.

The Journey Has Begun

It's too early in the morning. Our flight leaves at 8am PST from SFO to Denver and then further to Albuquerque right after lunch time. I can already envision the awesome Margaritas at the Pink Adobe in Santa Fe.

I had a fabelous drive from work yesterday. All packed up and with the top down. It was around 60 degrees all the way up to the city. Spring was in the air. I was amazingly comfortable with staying in lane two and three in about 65-75 mph. That's pretty unusual but I think I subconsciously wanted to extend the pleasure that 280 has given me over the past 2.5 years. I did hit it on the entry strip by Apple. Hard to resist sometimes. The roar the engine creates in those moments is pure passion!

Hmmm, lemme see - the boots are on, the buckle shines and the cigars are packed. Yes, honey - I AM ready!

Count Down

I woke up this morning to a beautiful blue sky, watching the sunrise color all the buildings to the west. The Golden Gate Bridge was clear from fogg and looked like on fire. A smaller sailboat passed under the bridge. An adventure has begun.

I feel like it's the last day of school before summer vacation. I got my grades and I'm ready to go. My bags are packed and the bank account emptied. I'm on a road to exploretation. When I look out over San Francisco I get the same exhilirating feeling as when I visited Paris for the first time (on my own) more than 15 years ago. I can smell the scent of a new beginning, of a new time, almost a new era.

I was asked yesterday how I planned to spend the next 90 days. The point of taking a break is NOT to conform to working life by planning, executing, beating deadlines and wearing a crisp drycleaned shirt.

But I know one thing, the next time I'm on my way south early in the morning it will be to catch some waves. And maybe while ripping it up I'll just fall in love with the sea all over again and decide to become a marin biologist or a deep sea skipper. Wouldn't that be something!

I'm Taking Some Time Off

I'm taking 3-months off and am more psycked than when I blast past Mini-Vans in my sportscar doing 110 mph . The roar, brother, the roar!

The plan is to do-be-do absolutely nothing that could be accused of creating any tangible or intangble value. After close to 10 years in the Internet industry and 5.5 years with Yahoo! it's time for a short breather. I need to get energized for the next phase of the Internet revolution.

The first plan of slack attack is spending this weekend in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, with family friends. I'm not promising anything but I might go after the world Margarita chugging record.

¡Ariba, abajo, por el centro, por el dentro!
